Sivota’s Sublime Beaches & Rich Past

Dive into Greece’s northwestern coast and explore beautiful beaches and storied sites, including Nekromanteion, Glyki and more.

About Your Trip

Immerse yourself in Greek history, mystery and mythology as you journey around the rugged coastal lands of northwestern Greece. Starting in Sivota, make your way to the village of Glyki to experience firsthand the allure of the springs of the Acherontas, one of the five fabled rivers of the Greek underworld. There, you’ll tour the legendary Nekromanteion of Ephyra, the country’s ancient temple of the dead. This massive sanctuary was dedicated to Hades, the feared lord of the underworld, and Persephone, the goddess he abducted as his queen. Continue to the quiet coastal fishing village of Ammoudia, where you’ll take a boat along the Acherontas River, also known as the “river of woe.” You can swim in the inviting waters, if weather permits, then savor a 3-course lunch before returning to your luxurious lodgings.

Back at the hotel, the rest of your trip is all yours — explore the area at your leisure, or simply relax with the gorgeious Ionian Sea as your companion.

What we love:

• Though associated with Hades and pain in Homeric poetry, the Acherontas River and its banks are rife with natural beauty. Blue-green waters and lush vegetation invite guests to enjoy a relaxing swim when weather permits.
• In your leisure time, take advantage of the included discount on spa treatments to pamper yourself and relax in style.
• Every room at your award-winning hotel boasts a private balcony with a view of either Bella Vraka Beach and the Ionian Sea, or Sivota village and the coastal mountains of the Epirus region.

Destination

Sivota, Greece, considered a jewel of the Greek mainland, is a village that boasts stunning beauty along with a laid-back atmosphere. The area’s rich history extends back to the Thesprotians, a Greek tribe of the Epirus region. The village was the site of the Battle of Sybota in 443 B.C. — at that time, the largest naval battle to date in the Greek city-states, and a catalyst for the Peloponnesian War. In Greek mythology, Odysseus stayed many years in Thesprotia, eventually marrying its queen, Callidice. Modern-day Sivota retains its unspoiled aura, nestled amid forests of pine, cypress and olive. The village harbor serves as its focal point, with a busy marina and many small, charming shops.
